GRANULAR AUTOMATA
Grain of Life is an audio effect plugin that fuses granular processing with Conway’s Game of Life. A cellular automaton runs in real time where every living cell triggers a grain of audio in the stereo field as the scan line passes through. Your textures evolve, mutate, and breathe without you touching a thing.
Draw cells directly on the grid or randomize to get started. Choose from three rule sets: classic Conway for evolving patterns, Coral for dense expanding textures, or Maze for intricate steady-state complexity. Shape your grains with controls for size, density, pitch intervals, reverse probability, filtering, and more.

:: FEATURES ::
- Grid Size – Resolution of the Life grid.
- Scan Rate – How many times per second the scan line sweeps the grid.
- Grain Size – Duration of each audio grain.
- Density – Probability that an active cell triggers a grain when scanned.
- Interval Mix – Chance and range of pitch-shifted grains at musical intervals (-5, +7, +12 semitones).
- Buffer Time – Length of the audio buffer.
- Spray – Randomizes grain position, pitch, and pan per grain.
- Envelope – Shapes grain amplitude window.
- Reverse – Probability that a grain plays backwards.
- Filter – Position-based lowpass filter intensity. Top of grid = bright, bottom = dark.
- Reverb – Stereo reverb mix on the granular output.
- Dry/Wet – Balance between original input and granular effect.
- Cell Age – Cells age visually (blue→red), older cells play quieter, and die after 20 generations in Conway mode.
- Freeze – Stops buffer recording and loops current contents.
- Life Rules – Different cellular automaton rule sets with distinct pattern behaviors. (Conway / Coral / Maze)
